In an effort to clean up the streets and improve the quality of life for citizens affected by substance abuse, Durban’s metro police have waged a relentless fight against drug-related crime in the city’s CBD.

An intelligence-led operation conducted on Wednesday resulted in the arrest of two suspected drug dealers on Che Guevara Road, under an overhead bridge.

Che Guevara Road, in the vicinity of the bridge, has become notorious as a haven for drug users, illicit narcotics trade, and prostitution. According to metro police, the operation highlighted law enforcement’s ongoing commitment to tackling drug trafficking and substance abuse in local communities.

The operation required several days of planning, followed by intelligence gathering, before stop-and-search activities were conducted. Officers cordoned off the identified hotspot and, having completed reconnaissance, were able to positively identify their targets.

The two suspects, one a foreign national and the other a South African citizen, were found in possession of an array of narcotics and related paraphernalia.

The recovered items included:

  • 50 heroin capsules

  • 55 heroin capsule loops

  • 20g sachets of crystal meth

  • 300g of heroin powder, including stones

  • Foreign currency

  • 41 syringes, alcohol swabs, saline solutions, and packaging materials

  • Coolers

The total estimated street value of the drugs seized is R44,863.

The recovered items were 50 heroin capsules, 55 heroin capsule loops, 21 sachets of crystal meth, and a staggering 300 grams of heroin powder, alongside various syringes and foreign currency.

Both suspects now face charges, including dealing in and possession of heroin and crystal meth, as well as violations of the Immigration Act. SAPS Umbilo are investigating the matter.

Role players in the operation included various metro police units, members of the Port Shepstone branch of the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks), and other law enforcement personnel.
