Focus, intensive training and discipline are among the top priorities for 33-year-old professional wrestler Joshua Jesse Chetty, known to fans as “Joshua The Bull”, as he prepares to compete against top international talent this weekend.
Chetty, who hails from Chatsworth, Durban, is affiliated with the World Association of Wrestling South Africa (WAWSA). He will showcase his wrestling skills in WAWSA’s premier “Guts and Glory” tournament at the Goue Fees (Gold Festival) in Randfontein, Johannesburg, on Saturday.
The event is expected to feature leading South African talent, including Ananzi Kobus Erasmus, known as the “Lion of Africa”, a professional wrestler, trainer and owner of the African Punishment Wrestling Association (APWA), who was trained by former WWE superstar Booker T, as well as Ryan Cage, an EFC fighter and international competitor, among others.
The event will be broadcast nationally.
With 16 years of wrestling under his belt, Chetty said his career has been marked by setbacks and injuries that nearly forced him to quit the ring. However, his perseverance and will to achieve spurred him on.
“I came to understand that my struggle and pursuit of a dream were not just for myself.”
Chetty said he was representing every youngster from Chatsworth who was told their dreams were too far-fetched, which drove him to become a source of inspiration for others.
Apart from wrestling, Chetty balances his career in the ring with his role as a personal trainer at the Virgin Active gym on the Bluff, where his focus is on health, fitness and performance.
Making his professional debut at the Chatsworth Youth Centre in 2010, winning the WWP Tag Team Championship in 2016, and being crowned the inaugural Arnold’s Champion at the Arnold Classic Africa 2023 event after defeating five opponents are among his outstanding career achievements.
Chetty has also had the experience of competing against international wrestlers in high-profile events staged locally. At the WrestleMonster event, he secured victories against United Kingdom wrestler El Bandolero and successfully defended his title at Sunfest Mayhem in 2024. In 2025, he recorded notable wins at the NSAW Nitro Brawl and WrestleMonster 7.
Going into Saturday’s tournament, Chetty said it is an honour to perform alongside some of the world’s top wrestlers and views the opportunity as a chance to represent South Africa and the African continent.
“I am under a lot of pressure as I am representing my country and continent. This means a lot to me to be competing with highly rated wrestlers,” he said.
