Swift action by police led to the dramatic rescue of a 38-year-old man in the Mayville area after he was kidnapped on Sunday, and the arrest of four suspects.
The family of the man, from Paddock near Port Shepstone on KwaZulu-Natal’s South Coast, reported him missing, prompting police to launch an intensive investigation.
Acting on information received, members of the South African Police Service (SAPS) Counter Narcotics Unit and the Provincial Organised Crime Threat Desk traced the suspects to a retail shop on St George’s Street in Durban.
They were supported by Durban Central Crime Prevention members, who assisted in cornering three suspects before they could flee .
A search of the suspects’ vehicle provided police with crucial evidence.
SAPS provincial spokesperson Paul Magwaza said that following the operation, the suspects were arrested on charges of kidnapping.
“Police searched their vehicle and recovered two of the victim’s bank cards as well as a cellphone SIM card,” Magwaza said.
Further investigations led officers to Mayville, where the kidnapped man was found alive. A fourth suspect was arrested at that location.
The four suspects were detained and charged with kidnapping. They are expected to appear in the Port Shepstone Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday.
