The second day of our media tour of the Hluhluwe iMfolozi Park, organized by Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife, began with an exhilarating early morning game drive that had me awake well before the 5 a.m. alarm I had set. The anticipation of experiencing nature’s wonders made sleep almost impossible. Our game drive commenced promptly at 5:30 a.m.

As the open-top Land Cruiser jostled along the red dirt track, an ethereal mist clung to the acacia trees, creating an almost magical atmosphere. It was a serene start to our day; the only agenda was the pursuit of a lion pride—or perhaps simply indulging in the exquisite beauty of the sunrise painting the sky.

Over an hour into our drive, we had yet to spot any of the famed Big Five. However, each moment spent in the park felt soul-fulfilling and soothing. Our knowledgeable tour guide, Samora Xulu, was alerted to the presence of lions by one of his colleagues. Xulu immediately turned the vehicle in the direction indicated. Our excitement was mounting.

After several kilometres of patient driving, we finally saw them: two magnificent lions, a male and a female, mating in the middle of the road. Glorious in the morning light, their amber fur glowed under the rising sun. Samora kept a respectful distance, cautioning us that lions can be particularly aggressive during mating, making it essential to maintain a safe proximity.

From the vantage point of the Land Cruiser, I couldn’t help but feel both small and awed. The sheer size of the lions was impressive—a stunning reminder of nature’s grandeur. Although our time with them was cut short due to our next appointment, the return journey was equally rewarding. Along the way, we encountered herds of elephants grazing gracefully in the bushes, alongside buffaloes strolling leisurely along the road. Definitely not a bad start to the day.

Staying at this A-listed public game reserve offered a mix of high-octane activities and an immersive escape into a sensory-driven retreat. At this park, visitors enjoy exhilarating wildlife encounters in scenic and peaceful settings—it’s food for the soul and the senses.

The lodge we stayed in was a proper place of rest: luxurious and immersive, where the boundaries between comfort and wilderness merge, a sanctuary in the heart of nature. Whether nestled on the edge of a breathtaking game reserve, perched atop a cliff with sweeping views, or tucked away amid the lush bush, every moment spent at the park is curated for those seeking tranquillity intertwined with beauty.
