A hostage situation unfolded at the Ntuzuma Police Station on Monday morning, resulting in the tragic death of an inmate who overpowered a police officer and opened fire. Officers at the station returned fire, and the inmate was killed during the shootout.

The incident, which sent shockwaves through the community, has raised concerns about inmate management and safety protocols at the facility.

According to police spokesperson Robert Netshiunda, the suspect had been in custody since Saturday for allegedly terrorising his family. His actions on Monday were described as an act of retaliation against the police.

"The suspect was aggrieved by the incident, and this was his way of retaliation," Netshiunda stated.

The ordeal began around 08:34 when a police officer stationed at the facility made an urgent call for assistance after the inmate overpowered him in the holding cells. Reports indicate that the suspect managed to snatch the officer's firearm and subsequently fired at responding police personnel.

Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) spokesperson Prem Balram confirmed that upon their arrival, officers engaged in a shootout with the suspect, which resulted in the inmate's death.

"On arrival, Reaction Officers established that the suspect had been neutralised during a shootout with the police," Balram said.

Fortunately, approximately six police officers who had been trapped inside the building were later freed, with some sustaining minor injuries.

Netshiunda added: "We are satisfied as the police that the matter was resolved and there were no casualties among our personnel. The suspect had been unruly even while in the cells."
