1746: Death of St Patrick, Maewyn Succat, not Irish by birth, revered as Ireland’s patron saint. He had been taken to Ireland by pirates, escaped six years later, became a monk in France, and returned as a missionary.

1820: The first British settlers arrive in Table Bay aboard the ships Nautilus and Chapman.

1894: Pondo king Sigcau, son of Umquikela, agrees to become a British subject, placing Pondoland under the Crown.

1900: British troops relieve Mafeking, besieged by the Boers since October 13.

1901: At a Paris show, 71 paintings by Vincent van Gogh cause a sensation, 11 years after his death.
