During 10 years of work in the Cape, she effected significant changes, such as improvements to sanitation and water, improved conditions for enslaved people, prisoners, and the mentally ill, and provision of a sanctuary for the leper population. Wherever she served, improvements were made to sanitary conditions and the diet and conditions of both the common soldier and other under-represented groups. In her guise as Dr James Barry, she also performed the first successful Caesarean section; the child was christened James Barry Munnik in her honour, and was the godfather of Boer War general and Prime Minister, JBM Hertzog. Barry’s gender remained a secret until her autopsy. The lyrics of the song, Anything You Can Do, I Can Do Better, from the movie Annie Get Your Gun, ring true.
