The investigation into the death of South African national Ntombi Toni Khumalo Jackson in Liberia has entered a critical phase, with authorities awaiting forensic and toxicology results to determine the exact cause of death.
Khumalo Jackson was found dead under suspicious circumstances at the couple’s residence in the Sinkor suburb of Monrovia on the evening of March 12. Her death has since triggered an active investigation by the Liberia National Police (LNP), who have identified her husband, prominent economist Samuel Jackson, as the prime suspect.
While Jackson was initially taken into custody, police confirmed that he has since been released following the expiry of the 48-hour statutory detention period. Despite his release, authorities emphasised that he remains central to the investigation.
Inspector General of Police Gregory Coleman confirmed that Jackson was released into the care of his legal counsel, with strict conditions imposed to ensure that he remains within the jurisdiction.
“The suspect has been ordered to surrender all travel documents to the LNP,” Coleman said during a media briefing.
He added that the investigation remains active, with police awaiting the outcome of key forensic processes that are expected to guide the next steps.
A preliminary autopsy was conducted at the St Moses Funeral Home over the weekend. However, authorities indicated that further testing may be required to establish the precise cause of death. This could include sending samples abroad for advanced toxicological analysis to determine whether poisoning or chemical intervention played a role.
Jackson has maintained his innocence, according to police.
Investigators say the pending forensic and toxicology reports will be critical in clarifying the circumstances surrounding Khumalo Jackson’s death, as they work to determine whether foul play was involved.
The case remains under investigation.
