A police operation targeting a group of wanted suspects ended in a fatal shootout in Bellair, Durban, on Monday, leaving four men dead and one suspect on the run.
KwaZulu-Natal police confirmed that the suspects had been linked to a series of serious crimes, including murder, attempted murder of police officers, hijackings, and multiple robberies affecting several communities.
According to provincial police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda, Crime Intelligence officers identified the suspects in the Bellair area and moved swiftly to act on the information.
“The suspects, who were tormenting the communities of Mbumbulu, KwaMakhutha, Ntuzuma, and Folweni, defied police orders to stop,” Netshiunda said.
A high-speed chase followed, with the suspects fleeing until they reached a residence believed to have been used as a hideout.
The situation escalated once police closed in on the property.
“A shootout ensued between police members and the suspects. Four suspects were shot and fatally wounded,” Netshiunda confirmed.
Police recovered four firearms at the scene, while one suspect managed to evade arrest and is still being sought.
“No police officer was injured during the shootout,” Netshiunda added.
Authorities have urged anyone with information on the remaining suspect to contact Crime Stop on 08600 10111.
