Twelve senior police officers were taken into custody on Tuesday over their alleged role in the controversial R360 million Medicare 24 Tshwane District contract.

The arrests were executed by the National Prosecuting Authority’s Investigating Directorate Against Corruption (IDAC), marking a significant escalation in the probe into the disputed tender.

According to NPA spokesperson Kaizer Kganyago, the accused—along with a company director—are expected to appear in the Pretoria Magistrates’ Court. They will face charges including corruption, fraud and alleged violations of the Public Finance Management Act (PFMA).

“The NPA’s IDAC effected an arrest of 12 senior police officers and a director of a company in relation to the irregular awarding of a tender to Medicare 24,” Kganyago confirmed.

The contract, awarded in 2024, was intended to deliver health and wellness services to police personnel. However, it quickly came under scrutiny amid allegations of irregularities, including missing compliance requirements and suspected links between the successful bidder and officials involved in the procurement process.

In 2025, National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola cancelled the contract after audits found it to be irregular.

The company tied to the deal is owned by businessman Vusimuzi Matlala, who has been in custody since May 2025.

Matlala, along with his wife Tsakane and three co-accused, faces 25 charges, including 11 counts of attempted murder, conspiracy to commit murder and money laundering. He was denied bail and remains behind bars in a high-security facility.

The case continues to unfold.
