Magasela Mzobe’s exit from one of the most influential positions in the MK Party has sharpened the spotlight on growing questions around stability within the organisation’s leadership.
Mzobe has stepped down as the MK Party’s head of the Presidency, a role that placed him at the centre of party operations and in close proximity to leader Jacob Zuma.
Multiple insiders told IOL that his resignation follows a fallout with Zuma, adding to mounting concerns about internal divisions within the party.
“This might have been the reason for him to resign,” a source said, pointing to increasing friction behind the scenes.
Another senior official suggested the issue extends beyond a single disagreement, describing a pattern of discord at the top.
“There have been multiple fallouts in the leadership, not necessarily with Mzobe, but across the board. This is why we’ve seen figures like Colleen Makhubele and Floyd Shivambu stepping down,” the official said.
Despite the speculation, Mzobe has publicly played down any tensions. In comments reported by EWN, he said his resignation was motivated by a desire to focus on his football club, Newcastle All Stars FC, and to expand his interests in sport.
A known Zuma loyalist, Mzobe has often described himself as the party leader’s “eyes, ears and hands,” making his departure from such a central role particularly notable.
IOL has approached the MK Party for comment and will include its response once received.
According to reports, the party has confirmed Mzobe’s resignation but declined to give reasons, further fuelling speculation about internal fractures at a critical stage for the organisation.
While stepping down from the Presidency role, Mzobe is expected to remain within the party as head of international relations, maintaining a presence in its leadership structures.
