As the Easter weekend approaches, KwaZulu-Natal's Premier, Thamsanqa Ntuli, is encouraging residents and visitors alike to prioritise safety, vigilance, and tolerance.
This comes in light of a surge in holidaymakers, particularly on major roadways such as the N3 highway, where traffic volumes have soared to around 2,500 vehicles per hour entering the province.
In his plea, Ntuli has reminded motorists to adhere strictly to road safety regulations.
He emphasised the necessity of ensuring that vehicles are roadworthy before embarking on any journeys, urging drivers to maintain responsible driving at all times.
The Premier’s message extends particularly to those operating buses and taxis carrying congregants to various Easter services.
He has called for rigorous vehicle inspections prior to travel and stressed the importance of rest for long-distance drivers.
“We must comply with speed limits and observe all road safety measures,” he stated.
“With law enforcement agencies out in full force, there will be zero tolerance for drinking and driving, overloading, and unroadworthy vehicles.”
Public safety will be fortified with the extensive deployment of Road Traffic Inspectorate teams, preparing to enforce a stringent crackdown on violators. Offenders, he warned, will face the full force of the law.
Beyond road safety, Premier Ntuli called for peace during the festive period, urging individuals to set aside grudges and refrain from violence.
“This Easter weekend must not be used as an opportunity to settle scores or pursue acts of revenge.
I urge all who may have differences to choose peace, restraint, and dialogue over violence,” he passionately conveyed, indicating that mutual stability is crucial for attracting investment and fostering economic growth.
Moreover, he has urged those in possession of illegal firearms to voluntarily surrender them before law enforcement takes action.
“Removing illegal guns from circulation is critical in reducing violent crime,” he insisted.Special emphasis has been placed on the need to protect vulnerable groups during the holiday period.
“Parents and guardians must ensure that children and vulnerable persons are not left unattended,” Premier Ntuli advised, underscoring that their safety must be a paramount concern.
As a measure to ensure public safety, the Premier confirmed that there will be increased police visibility across all districts within the province. This proactive strategy aims to deter criminal activity while creating a secure environment for both residents and visitors to enjoy.
Expressing gratitude, Premier Ntuli acknowledged the efforts of law enforcement and community safety stakeholders, including the South African Police Service (SAPS) and Municipal Law Enforcement, for their unwavering dedication to keeping communities safe during this busy time.
