A suspected targeted drive-by shooting has raised fresh concerns about gun violence on major Durban routes after two men were shot dead on the M1 Higginson Highway in Chatsworth on Saturday night.

Emergency services were dispatched to the scene near the RK Khan’s off-ramp at around 9.30pm, where they found two men seated inside a stationary breakdown vehicle. Both victims had sustained multiple gunshot wounds.

Paramedics assessed the men but found no signs of life, and they were declared dead at the scene.

It is understood that the vehicle had come to a stop when another car approached. Occupants of the second vehicle allegedly opened fire before fleeing the area, suggesting a possible targeted attack.

Members of the South African Police Service (SAPS) were already on the scene when paramedics arrived and had cordoned off the area for further investigation.

Additional emergency responders confirmed that multiple services, including metro police and forensic teams, attended the scene.

The exact circumstances leading up to the shooting remain unclear, and police have launched an investigation into the incident.

The brazen nature of the attack on a busy roadway has intensified concerns around public safety, particularly on key transport routes in the south of Durban.
