The death of acclaimed filmmaker and actor Kumaran Naidu at the age of 52 has not only left a void in South Africa’s film industry but also marked the end of an era for locally produced Indian cinema.

Best known for his groundbreaking films Broken Promises and Run for Your Life, Naidu built a body of work that brought Durban’s communities, stories and cultural identity into the spotlight—often with limited resources but unwavering vision.

Originally from Chatsworth in Durban, Naidu later lived in Gauteng, where he continued shaping narratives that resonated with audiences across the country and beyond.

In a statement, his family said his illness was “borne with courage and dignity,” adding that he remained deeply committed to storytelling until the end.

“Mr Naidu was widely regarded as an iconic voice in film and television. He was the creative force behind acclaimed works including ‘Broken Promises 1–5’ and ‘Run For Your Life’, among others. His projects championed local narratives and brought Durban and South African experiences to national and international audiences,” the family said.

Beyond his filmography, Naidu’s influence was deeply felt in the industry through his mentorship of emerging creatives. Colleagues have described him as a visionary who not only told stories but actively created pathways for others to do the same.

“He believed in local Indian cinema and blazed a trail for others to follow and create household names in the process,” the family added.

His passing has reignited conversations about the importance of supporting independent filmmakers and preserving culturally rooted storytelling in South Africa.

Naidu is survived by his wife Fiona, sons Sudarshan and Maheshan, and his three dogs Arri, Alexa and Kia. The family has thanked the public for the outpouring of support and the medical teams who cared for him, while requesting privacy during this period of mourning.

They have also urged that his legacy be honoured through continued support for local film and the arts.

Details of a memorial service celebrating his life and work will be announced.
