Woolworths confirms that Chuckles lovers can continue to enjoy their favourite treats despite recent liquidation news surrounding Beyers Chocolates

Chocolate drama rarely makes headlines—but this one came dangerously close to a national snack crisis.
Fans of Chuckles can stand down: despite swirling reports of liquidation and behind-the-scenes tension, the colourful sweets lining checkout aisles are not disappearing.
At the centre of the storm is Beyers Chocolates, the long-standing producer of Chuckles, which was reported by Financial Mail to have entered liquidation following a dispute with retail giant Woolworths. The disagreement, according to reports, stemmed from an exclusive supply agreement that came under strain when Beyers moved to expand its factory operations—potentially shifting the balance of that exclusivity.
On paper, it sounds like a classic corporate fallout: expansion ambitions on one side, retail control on the other. The kind of boardroom battle that usually ends with empty shelves and disappointed customers.
But here’s the twist—Woolworths says not so fast.
In a firm reassurance to BusinessTech, the retailer made it clear that Chuckles aren’t going anywhere. Stock remains widely available across the country, signalling that whatever is unfolding at a corporate level has not (yet) filtered down to the chocolate aisle.
For a brand with a near cult-like following, that matters. Chuckles aren’t just sweets—they’re a small, sugar-coated piece of South African nostalgia.
Meanwhile, Beyers Chocolates—founded in 1987 by Kees Beyers and based in Kempton Park—remains a heavyweight in the local confectionery space. Beyond Chuckles, its portfolio stretches across products like Sweetie Pie, an Amarula-infused chocolate range, and various premium and craft offerings.
So while the corporate story behind the scenes may still be unfolding, the public-facing reality is far simpler: the shelves are still full, the packets still colourful, and for now, the great Chuckles scare of 2026 is just that—a scare.
