South Africa is celebrating 32 years of democracy.

Foreign praise and local pride give way to anger, frustration and deep division over what freedom really means in today’s South Africa.
@MDNnewss Freedom Day celebrations in Bloemfontein were briefly disrupted after an individual attempted to attack President Cyril Ramaphosa and Minister Gayton McKenzie on stage, before security quickly intervened.
@Dzungie007 We fought for freedom from apartheid, only to be colonised by illegal foreigners. Our streets aren’t safe. Our businesses are being undercut.
@Thooso_M It’s the ANC, not the immigrants. If the ANC wanted this country to be safe, it would have been. If they wanted to fight unemployment, they would have. They have the means, but choose not to. They were deploying soldiers during Covid.
@philhajphil Where exactly do you stay where you have been colonised?
@WanlainjoCI I blame white supremacy.
@Sebenzile54961 I blame the government. Our borders are a joke, immigration officials are clowns — you don’t need much to bribe them. And the police don’t act until people take the law into their own hands.
@BantuHolomisa Freedom must mean more than a yearly celebration. We cannot play with our freedom while communities struggle and corruption steals our future. The time for excuses is over. The time for rebuilding has begun.
@kimheller3 Without land, there is no freedom.
@brettherron As we celebrate political freedom today, we cannot ignore that freedom must also be measured by whether lives have improved. In Gugulethu, many still live in inhuman conditions, trapped in poverty and reliant on the state for basic services and housing.
@nhanha_nd Remember, we are not free. We were sold the illusion of freedom.
@djsbu The country is at a precipice, potentially beyond return. People are exhausted and frustrated, weary of lectures and intellectualising.
@John_Mphatsoe My granny fought for our freedom. Long live the spirit of Mama Adelaide Tambo. Your sacrifices will never be forgotten, and we will continue to tell your story.
