As South Africa continues to navigate the complexities of local governance and economic challenges, Endumeni Local Municipality Mayor Mcebo Mkhize has unveiled plans aimed at revitalising key industrial areas while addressing pressing community concerns.
Speaking during a community engagement and budget consultation event on Tuesday, Mkhize expressed his commitment to transforming the landscapes of Dundee KwaZulu-Natal, Glencoe KwaZulu-Natal and Nquthu KwaZulu-Natal, where efforts are under way to breathe new life into previously thriving industrial zones.
“We now wish to develop these areas, especially Nquthu, so that they can help our people,” Mkhize said.
He indicated that the municipality had applied to the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs South Africa (COGTA) for assistance through its Small Town Regeneration Programme (STR).
The STR is an initiative aimed at achieving spatial transformation while managing growing urban populations without neglecting rural communities.
Mkhize said the municipality intends to reinstate industrial activity that once created significant employment opportunities in these towns, citing the example of a once-thriving glass manufacturing company in Dundee.
He also acknowledged ongoing service delivery challenges. Despite progress in refurbishing and resurfacing identified roads, many residents continue to experience difficulties.
“This roadshow allows us to report on the progress made and to adjust our plans based on the direct inputs that are going to be cascaded today,” Mkhize said.
“It is important to reflect on our achievements from the previous financial year and the challenges we continue to face.”
The mayor also addressed issues such as cable theft and electricity disruptions, which he said place significant strain on the municipality’s budget of over R300 million and its operational capacity.
While acknowledging that some of his remarks might be perceived as provocative, Mkhize said his intention was to engage constructively with communities. He added that efforts to combat criminal activity, in collaboration with law enforcement agencies, would be intensified in areas such as Ndomena KwaZulu-Natal and Etomisomosh KwaZulu-Natal.
Adding to the municipality’s transformation plans, Deputy Minister of Transport Mkhuleko Hlengwa also addressed the gathering. He outlined the Ground Transport Management (GTM) modernisation programme, which aims to address infrastructure and water-related challenges in the Umzinyathi District Municipality, an area comprising seven wards.
Mkhize expressed optimism about the initiative, which is expected to be implemented within the next three months.
“We are collectively looking forward to the positive outcomes this programme will bring to our community,” he said.
