A quiet Limpopo village has been shaken by a chilling reminder of how vulnerable children can be—even inside their own homes—after a two-year-old girl was abducted in the early hours of Saturday morning.
Police have launched an urgent manhunt following the disappearance of Omphile Sethole, who was taken from her family home in Ga-Mabuela Village under circumstances that have raised serious safety concerns.
According to police spokesperson Malesela Ledwaba, the toddler was last seen at around 2am when her grandmother briefly took her along to the bathroom before returning to bed.
But just four hours later, the situation took a terrifying turn.
“When the grandmother woke again at around 6am, the child was missing, and a window of the room was open,” Ledwaba said.
What followed was a frantic search by family members and neighbours, scouring the area in the hope of finding the missing toddler. When those efforts failed, the family reported the case at Tinmyne Police Station, prompting a full-scale police response.
Authorities have since mobilised resources in a race against time to locate the child and track down the unknown suspect. At the time of her disappearance, Omphile was wearing a pink jersey and black tights.
Limpopo Police Commissioner Thembi Hadebe has issued an urgent public appeal, emphasising the seriousness of crimes involving children.
“All available resources have been mobilised to assist with the investigation and search for the baby girl,” Hadebe said, calling on anyone with information to come forward.
The incident brought to the fore the growing concerns around child safety in residential spaces, where breaches—such as an open window in the dead of night—can turn into devastating incidents within hours.
Police investigations are ongoing, with authorities urging the public to report any information that could assist in bringing the child home safely.
