A routine early morning commute turned into a scene of devastation when a fully loaded minibus taxi carrying workers collided with an oncoming bus in the Eastern Cape, leaving seven people dead and multiple others injured.

According to transport department spokesperson Unathi Binqose, the crash occurred at around 6am when the taxi, travelling from KwaNobuhle towards town, allegedly attempted a U-turn in the path of an approaching Algoa Bus, which at the time had only the driver on board.

The bus struck the passenger side of the taxi, resulting in a high-impact collision that left the roadway strewn with wreckage.

“A total of 18 people were attended to on the scene. Two sustained serious injuries, while others suffered varying degrees of injuries and were transported to nearby medical facilities for treatment,” Binqose said.

Emergency responders arrived swiftly, working to stabilise the injured before rushing them to hospital.

Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident, with attention centred on the circumstances that led to the taxi’s manoeuvre into oncoming traffic.
