As KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) continues to be celebrated for its scenic beaches and rich cultural heritage, a new initiative is shifting attention to another equally compelling attraction: the province’s gastronomy.

Spearheaded by Ntobeko Sikosana, founder of the gastronomy development agency Joy Pass, the initiative is being rolled out in collaboration with the KwaZulu-Natal Film and Tourism Authority. It aims to profile and elevate the diverse food experiences available across the province’s coastal, urban, and inland regions.

“KZN is not just about the beach or shopping; we have an array of fantastic food, exquisite local products, and a rich culinary tradition,” said Sikosana.

The region also boasts a growing selection of wineries, distilleries and breweries eager to showcase their offerings to both local and international visitors.

“It’s about time we tell the story of KZN's gastronomy and position it on the global culinary map,” he said.

The new initiative, known as Taste KZN, is set to curate unique experiences that celebrate local cuisine, highlighting flavours that reflect the province’s diverse cultural landscape.

“We want to take these gastronomic experiences to the world,” said Sikosana, who believes the effort could help redefine how both South Africans and international visitors perceive the region.

While Stellenbosch has long been regarded as South Africa’s leading wine tourism hub, Sikosana is keen to highlight KZN’s emerging role in the sector.

“Wine making is fundamentally similar across regions, but KZN's unique altitude and weather conditions impart distinctive tasting profiles to our wines,” he said.

He added that local producers have refined their craft over many years and are also producing Méthode Cap Classique (MCC), a sparkling wine style synonymous with quality.

Sikosana welcomed the collaboration between Joy Pass and the KwaZulu-Natal Film and Tourism Authority, saying it strengthens efforts to elevate the province’s gastronomic identity by showcasing everything from organic produce to artisanal spirits.

“It’s about showcasing our heritage through food,” he said.
