The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Education has officially launched phase two of its matric second chance programme, aimed at providing additional academic support to learners seeking to improve their results.

The initiative forms part of the Department of Basic Education’s broader Second Chance Matric Programme, which gives learners an opportunity to rewrite subjects in order to obtain the National Senior Certificate (NSC) or Senior Certificate (SC) and ultimately secure their matric qualification.

The department said it intends expanding the programme to ensure that more young people are given an opportunity to improve their academic outcomes and realise their potential.

Learners participating in the programme will qualify for free tuition, offering much-needed support to families facing financial pressure.

Classes are expected to begin on July 1, with several learning centres across KwaZulu-Natal identified to provide face-to-face tuition.

The designated centres include Ethangeni Secondary School, Kranskop Secondary School, ML Sultan Secondary School in iLembe District, Mpoqabulungu Secondary School, Ndwedwe Educational Centre and Thembalentsha Secondary School.

Learners from districts not yet listed have been encouraged to look out for announcements regarding registration dates and centres in their respective areas.

In addition to physical classes, the Department of Education has also introduced a virtual tuition programme aimed at increasing accessibility for learners unable to attend face-to-face sessions.

The department said learners will be able to participate in the online classes from home without prior registration.

Virtual lessons will run from Monday to Friday, allowing learners greater flexibility in balancing their studies with other responsibilities.

The department further urged learners from districts not yet announced to monitor communication regarding local registration centres and programme updates.

For further information or assistance, learners may contact L Makhaye-Yeni on 072 902 6462 or Z Mtshali on 081 795 1152.
