A successful operation by the Metro Police, working with other law enforcement agencies, led to the recovery of over R1.1 million worth of counterfeit Springbok-branded items.

In a statement, the eThekwini Municipality confirmed that the seizure included 781 clothing items such as caps, hats, scarves, T-shirts, beanies, and earmuffs.

Metro Police spokesperson Colonel Boysie Zungu explained that the operation was conducted under the Counterfeit Goods Act.

He said this legal framework was crucial in “ensuring the removal of illicit merchandise from circulation and thus protecting the integrity of legitimate brands.”

Colonel Zungu added that the operation forms part of “ongoing efforts to curb crime in the City, in all its forms,” highlighting the continued commitment by authorities to tackle various forms of criminal activity across the municipality.

The crackdown comes shortly after the Springboks played against Argentina at Kings Park Stadium in Durban over the past weekend, an event which likely saw increased demand for official merchandise.
