Police at Makuya, under the Vhembe District in Limpopo, are investigating a case of rape which allegedly took place at Mavunde village in the period between June 2025 and September 2025.

Provincial police spokesperson, Colonel Malesela Ledwaba, said the incident came to light on 22 November when the victim's mother was at home with her 14-year-old disabled daughter.

The mother noticed that the teenager’s stomach was growing, and asked her if she was pregnant.

“The victim denied being pregnant. On Sunday, 23 November 2025, at about 6 am, the mother entered the room and again asked her daughter, the victim, whether she was pregnant. The victim then revealed that her cousin entered her room and had sexual intercourse with her on several occasions without her consent between June 2025 and September 2025,” said Ledwaba.

The victim was taken to the nearest clinic for a medical examination, and it was confirmed that she was indeed pregnant.

Police were notified, and a case of rape was opened.

“No arrest has been made, and the matter will be referred to the probation officer for further directive as both the suspect and victim are said to be minors,” said Ledwaba.

Last year, IOL reported that a 54-year-old Limpopo man was convicted and sentenced for raping his mentally disabled 31-year-old stepdaughter.

The rape ordeal happened in January 2019 at Pulaneng village, under the Maake policing area.

The rapist, who cannot be named to protect the identity of the abused woman, was sentenced to 25 years' imprisonment by the Naphuno Magistrate’s Court. At the time, Colonel Ledwaba said the rape happened after the victim’s mother left her at home in the company of the stepfather.

The mother was heading to Maake Plaza to do some shopping.

“The stepfather took advantage of the defenceless, mentally disabled victim and raped her during her mother's absence,” said Ledwaba.

After the rape ordeal, the victim was threatened and instructed not to tell her mother. She kept her silence until February 2019, when the stepfather had left for Gauteng.

The victim revealed the rape incident, and a case was immediately reported at Maake police station.

“A rape case was opened and transferred to Tzaneen family violence, child protection and sexual offences unit (FCS), and Sergeant Klaas Mulungwa was tasked to further investigate the matter,” said Ledwaba.

The stepfather was arrested after he handed himself to police on February 25, 2019.
