A 30-year-old Mpumalanga woman has been sentenced to 57 years’ imprisonment after she pleaded guilty to charges including murder, kidnapping, and cybercrime.

According to Mpumalanga police spokesperson Captain Mpho Nonyane-Mpe, the 30-year-old Nonhlanhla Portia Nkosi was sentenced by the Evander Magistrate’s Court following her conviction for the murder of Sfiso Lucky Khubeka, who was reported missing on 21 April 2024.

Nonyane-Mpe said Khubeka’s disappearance triggered an intensive investigation that uncovered a criminal syndicate involved in kidnapping, assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, intimidation, cybercrime and robbery-related offences.

Nkosi pleaded guilty to eight charges: kidnapping and assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm of an unnamed victim; kidnapping, murder and robbery with aggravating circumstances relating to Khubeka; contravention of the Cybercrimes Act; cyber fraud; and intimidation.

The court heard that Khubeka’s body was later found floating in the Roodebank River, with his hands bound using cable ties and his legs tied with a rope attached to a large rock.

The State presented what police described as a watertight case, leading to Nkosi’s conviction and the imposition of an effective 57-year prison sentence.

Her co-accused, Mandla Skosana, Sibusiso Skosana and Seun Mpenzi, pleaded not guilty and will continue to stand trial.

Mpumalanga acting provincial police commissioner Major General Zeph Mkhwanazi welcomed the sentence, commending detectives, prosecutors and the judiciary for their role in securing the conviction.

“We are pleased with the successful outcome of this case and the efforts of our members. We will continue to work tirelessly to ensure that those who break the law are brought to book,” Mkhwanazi said.
