KwaZulu-Natal police have confirmed the arrest of a 24-year-old man following a violent domestic incident in Umlazi that sparked widespread attention on social media.

According to police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda, the suspect was arrested on Monday, 12 January 2026, less than two days after his 31-year-old girlfriend opened a case of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm at the Umlazi police station.

Colonel Netshiunda said the incident occurred in V Section, Umlazi, after the suspect called the woman to his home to collect her belongings.

“It is alleged that upon her arrival, the suspect assaulted her with a pipe, bit her, and continued to assault her with his hands,” Netshiunda said.

The victim reportedly managed to flee to her vehicle, but the suspect followed her and smashed the rear windscreen.

Police investigations further revealed that the woman is currently in hospital with burn injuries after allegedly setting her boyfriend’s car alight, reducing it to ashes. Once she is discharged, she is expected to face charges of assault and malicious damage to property.

Netshiunda added that police records indicate the couple has a history of laying charges against each other, with some of their previous cases already having been finalised in court.

The arrested suspect is expected to appear in court soon.

Police have urged couples experiencing relationship difficulties to seek help through trusted family members, friends or professional support services instead of resorting to violence.
