A 39-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the assault of an Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) traffic warden in Alberton.
According to the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department, the suspect was arrested on Thursday, 15 January 2026, by officers from the department’s Community Liaison Unit.
The arrest follows an incident that occurred on 10 December 2025, during which a female traffic warden was allegedly assaulted. A case was subsequently opened in Germiston, but the assailant allegedly fled the scene.
Police said officers received information regarding the whereabouts of the blue BMW believed to have been involved in the incident. On Thursday, the vehicle was detected by a licence plate recognition camera while travelling through Alberton.
Officers stopped the vehicle on Voortrekker Road, where the driver was interviewed and allegedly admitted to being involved in an altercation with the traffic warden.
The suspect was arrested and informed of his constitutional rights. He was detained at Germiston police station and is expected to appear in the Germiston Magistrate’s Court on a charge of assault.
The EMPD has condemned the attack, warning that violence against law enforcement officers is a serious criminal offence that endangers lives and undermines public safety and the rule of law.
The department has also urged motorists and members of the public to respect traffic officers and other law enforcement personnel, cautioning that acts of violence or intimidation against officers will result in arrest and prosecution.
