KwaZulu-Natal Premier Thamsanqa Ntuli has condemned the brutal murders of three children in the province, hacked to death, allegedly by their uncle.

At the weekend, 15-year-old Kwanele Gumede, Amanda Khumalo, aged 9, and Ayabonga Khumalo, aged seven, were found dead in their home in Manguzi in the uMkhanyakude District.

It is believed that their mother left them at home on Saturday night and when she got back a short while later, she found them dead.

At the time, KZN police said police were called to the scene and a suspect was arrested the next day.

He has since appeared in court and is due back next week.

According to the Sunday Tribune, the accused was recently released on parole following a previous murder conviction.

Describing the murders as "deeply disturbing", Ntuli said the act was senseless and unforgivable.

"The killing of innocent children, especially within the family environment that should serve as their safest space, has left the province devastated and in mourning," he said.

Ntuli further conveyed his condolences to the family.

He has called for a thorough investigation and urged the community to report early signs of domestic violence to police.

The Premier said the Department of Social Development and Community Safety Liaison will work with officials to ensure counselling for the family and community.
