Four suspects have been arrested in connection with a cash-in-transit (CIT) heist that took place in Mohlakeng on the West Rand earlier this week.

The robbery occurred on Wednesday afternoon, 4 February 2026, at about 4.40 pm along the R28 near Extension 11 in Mohlakeng.

According to the South African Police Service, the suspects were arrested the same day following a tactical intelligence-driven operation conducted in Kagiso.

Police recovered two white vehicles — a Mercedes-Benz and a Toyota C-HR — as well as two rifles, magazines and ammunition, among other items.

SAPS spokesperson in Gauteng, Captain Tintswalo Sibeko, said the arrests were the result of coordinated efforts by multiple specialised units.

“The arrest was a result of collaborative efforts between Crime Intelligence, the CIT Team, West Rand TRT, Police Emergency Services, Flexi and FCS specialised services,” Sibeko said.

All four arrested suspects are expected to appear before the Randfontein Magistrate’s Court on Friday, 6 February 2026.

In January, as South Africa stepped into 2026, IOL reported that the persistent threat of cash-in-transit (CIT) robberies remains a critical concern. However, the Cash-In-Transit Association of South Africa (Citasa) committed to a determined effort to continue the downward trend in these brazen heists.

“Citasa will work towards ensuring, through the collaborative efforts, that we continue to see a decrease in CIT heists in South Africa. The main focus will remain on the saving of lives, protection of assets and creating a stable environment for cash operations,” Citasa head Grant Clark said.

He said Citasa enhances the safety of CIT operations through continuous stakeholder engagements, sharing information and crime risk analysis to facilitate intelligence-led operations with law enforcement.

Clark noted that safety measures are in place to protect CIT employees while on duty.
