Police have arrested a 49-year-old man for possession of a suspected stolen Toyota Hilux GD-6 at the Nkomazi Toll Plaza along the N4 near Kaapmuiden in Mpumalanga.

The arrest was made on Wednesday afternoon during routine patrols by members of the Vehicle Identification Section, together with officers from Kaapmuiden police station and other police units.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Jabu Ndubane said officers stopped the white Toyota Hilux GD-6 with Mpumalanga registration plates as it approached the toll gate.

“A circulation check conducted on the vehicle returned positive, confirming that it had been reported stolen in Emalahleni, with a case opened at SAPS Vosman,” Ndubane said.

She said the suspect insisted that he was not involved in the theft of the vehicle and claimed he had merely collected it from a car wash in Nelspruit, where he was instructed to pick it up and drop it off in Malelane.

“Despite his explanation, the driver was arrested and charged with possession of a suspected stolen motor vehicle,” Ndubane said.

The arrested man was scheduled to appear before the Barberton Magistrate’s Court.

Acting Mpumalanga provincial police commissioner Major General Zeph Mkhwanazi welcomed the arrest and praised officers for their vigilance, warning that police would continue to intensify operations to make the province increasingly hostile to criminals.
