Limpopo police are investigating a case of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm (GBH) after a security officer allegedly fired shots with a toy gun at a group of African National Congress (ANC) members during a party meeting.
The incident took place at a primary school in Musunda village in the Vhembe district.
Limpopo police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba said the incident occurred on Saturday, February 7, 2026, at about 2.30pm.
“It is alleged that a 32-year-old man, together with five other victims who are members of a political party, arrived at the primary school to participate in political party election proceedings,” Ledwaba said.
Ledwaba said upon arrival, they allegedly found the school gate closed and locked while other members were already inside the premises.
“The victims reportedly stood outside the gate demanding entry from the Security Services guards who were inside the school premises.”
“During the confrontation, it is alleged that one of the security guards fired shots using a shotgun, injuring the complainant and other victims.”
Ledwaba said the victims sustained injuries to the upper and lower body.
“Police were summoned to the scene and opened a case of assault (GBH).”
“The injured victims received medical attention.”
Ledwaba said police in Mutale, have opened a case of Assault with Intent to Cause Grievous Bodily Harm (GBH) following the incident.
He said no arrests have been made at this stage and investigations are ongoing.
Meanwhile, the ANC in Limpopo said it has noted with “grave concern the violence” that erupted during a branch general meeting held in Ward 11, Musina, in the Vhembe Region on the weekend.
“As the ANC in Limpopo, we condemn the violence and intimidation that occurred during the Branch General Meeting (BGM),” said provincial spokesperson Jimmy Mathole Machaka.
“Such conduct constitutes criminal behaviour and thuggery, and stands in direct contradiction to the principles, values, and long-standing traditions of the African National Congress.”
He said the party has directed the regional leadership in Vhembe to submit a comprehensive report on the incident and to institute corrective measures against any member found to have acted outside the organisation's principles, Constitution, and values.
“The ANC wishes all those who were injured during the incident a speedy recovery and further urges law enforcement authorities to take appropriate action against any criminal conduct.”
“The ANC in Limpopo reminds all its members and structures that only members in good standing as at December 31, 2025 are eligible to participate in Branch General Meetings convened for the purpose of the provincial conference and under no circumstances should members who are not members in good standing force entry into or participate in BGMs,” he added.
