A 56-year-old teacher has been arrested for murder and attempted murder following a fatal shooting in Elukwatini in the early hours of Saturday morning.
Mpumalanga police said officers responded to reports of a shooting at about 2.10 am.
On arrival, police found a 22-year-old woman in the street with a gunshot wound to her foot. She told officers that she had been shot by her mother’s male friend and that her mother had also been shot inside the house.
Police then entered the home where they found the 45-year-old woman lying on the floor in a pool of blood. She had sustained a gunshot wound to the head.
Emergency Medical Services declared the mother dead at the scene, while her daughter was transported to hospital for medical treatment.
The suspect was found inside the house and was immediately arrested. Police confiscated the firearm believed to have been used in the shooting.
He is expected to appear in the Albert Luthuli Magistrate’s Court soon on charges of murder and attempted murder.
Acting Mpumalanga provincial police commissioner Major General Zeph Mkhwanazi has condemned the incident and conveyed condolences to the family of the deceased.
Mkhwanazi expressed concern over ongoing incidents of gender-based violence and femicide, saying such acts must come to an end. He urged members of the public to seek help when facing personal challenges instead of resorting to violence.
Police investigations are ongoing.
