Police in the Eastern Cape have launched an urgent investigation following the fatal shooting of two women aged 44 and 65 in Gebane locality, Zinkumbini A/A, on Monday afternoon.

Acting OR Tambo District Commissioner, Brigadier Vukile Ntuli, condemned the attack, describing the incident as a brutal act of violence that has shocked the local community.

According to police spokesperson Captain Welile Matyolo, the shooting occurred at about 4pm when the 44-year-old victim was walking home from work as a security guard at a local school.

“The 44-year-old woman was on her way home from her workplace, where she works as a security guard in a local school, when she met two unknown men,” Matyolo said.

Police say one of the suspects opened fire on her, prompting her to flee towards a nearby homestead where a 65-year-old woman was present. The attackers allegedly followed her.

“One of the male suspects opened fire on the 45-year-old female victim who ran to a nearby homestead occupied by a 65-year-old elderly woman. The male suspect continued shooting at both women and they both succumbed to their injuries,” Matyolo said.

The double killing has triggered a manhunt as police appeal to the public for assistance in tracking down those responsible.

Authorities have urged community members to come forward with any information that may assist investigations as the search for the suspects intensifies.

"All information will be treated with the strictest confidentiality,” Matyolo said.
