The National Freedom Party (NFP) has confirmed that it remains outside the KwaZulu-Natal Government of Provincial Unity (GPU) and it will continue to serve on the opposition benches, despite renewed political engagements in the province.
In a statement released after its withdrawal from the KZN GPU on November 1, 2025, the party said it wished “to provide clarity on its position regarding the KwaZulu-Natal Government of Provincial Unity (GPU) and the recent political developments”.
The NFP revealed that since announcing its withdrawal, it has been approached and engaged separately by the African National Congress (ANC), Democratic Alliance (DA), and the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP).
It also confirmed that it met with the IFP last Sunday, stating that “while discussions have not yet concluded, they are expected to continue.”
However, the party made it clear that no agreements have been concluded.
“Our position stands firm, we are content to serve on the opposition bench,'' the party said.
“To date, no confirmation or agreements have been made with any party.”
The NFP said it anticipates that further engagements may take place should they be deemed necessary, noting that all parties have indicated their intention to revert to the NFP during the second phase of agreements.
As part of what it described as ongoing political participation and progression, the party said it had “convened close engagements with the MKP and EFF to deliberate on respective positions regarding the state of the KZN-GPU.”
During those discussions, the party stated that “the second round of the motion of no confidence against the KZN Premier, Thami Ntuli, was tabled.”
It confirmed that the talks resulted in a joint position.
“A mutual agreement was reached. The MKP, EFF, and NFP have resolved to support the second round of the vote of no confidence.”
“Further details of these discussions will be made in public in due course.”
''The NFP remains committed to consistency in its work,'' said the party.
It added that it treats all parties with equal attention and respect, ensuring that our engagements are conducted with fairness, dignity, and transparency.
