Deon Mostert, branded a "chronic liar" by former police commissioner George Fivaz, has led Independent Complaints Directorate investigators to a Sea Point police sergeant for questioning in connection with the St Elmo's bomb blast.
The sergeant was arrested on Monday evening at the police station on charges of corruption and conspiracy to commit murder. He will also be questioned by directorate investigators for a number of car bombings, including those outside the Athlone and Caledon Square police stations last year.
"He is being held for questioning in respect of robberies at the Stellenbosch and Claremont police stations, car bombings in the Western Cape and the St Elmo's bomb blast last year," the directorate's regional head, Riaz Saloojee, said on Tuesday.
The sergeant is to appear in the Cape Town magistrate's court on Wednesday.
Saloojee said the conspiracy to commit murder charge related to the sergeant allegedly conspiring with police agents to murder a young rape victim by injecting her with rat poison.
Saloojee confirmed that the sergeant was an accused in the rape case. The rape victim is at present in the witness protection programme.
The corruption charge related to the alleged selling of a bullet-proof vest, stolen during a robbery at Claremont police station on January 3, Saloojee said.
Saloojee confirmed that the sergeant was also being held for questioning for a similar-style armed robbery at Stellenbosch police station in which a number of guns and ammunition were stolen.
He added that his unit was confident of more arrests.
The directorate has been questioning Mostert for at least two months after he named top senior policemen as being involved in the bomb blasts in the Western Cape.
Mostert's revelations followed months of speculation by Pagad, whose members are now facing charges for many acts of urban terrorism, that the police and National Intelligence Agency had been behind the blasts.
