Residents make a big stink about SPCA site

An impasse between residents of Cato Manor and the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals is raising a stink.

Upset by years of stench emanating from the SPCA-owned site in Cato Manor where the bodies of stray and dead pets are burned daily, local residents are now pushing for its relocation.

The row, dating back eight years, culminated in residents taking to the streets last week to express their disgust at "being forced to put up with eating their meals in the smelly atmosphere" and ire at "having to toyi-toyi because no one seems prepared to listen".

Sipho Mzimela told reporters that "simmering

tensions among residents have reached boiling point".

SPCA spokesperson Caroline Smith confirmed that an incinerator was used and she sympathised with the community for the resultant smell.

However, the SPCA did not have funding to move as it was a non-profit organisation.

Talks between the association and city officials began in earnest this week.
