Another television exposé on alleged corrupt officials, this time in the department of home affairs, resulted in several arrests in Gauteng on Tuesday.

Home Affairs director-general Barry Gilder said two department officials at the Market Street home affairs office in Johannesburg, an agent and three "runners" were arrested as a result of a Special Assignment investigation which was to be broadcast on Tuesday night.

Only one person identified in the documentary had yet to be arrested, he said.

Investigations were still continuing and charges were being formulated.

The two department employees included a cleaner and an administration officer.

The pair would also face disciplinary action.

The agent was a former "volunteer' in the department, while the "runners" were not state employees but "people who move between the department and the crooked clients", Gilder said.

He said the suspects were accused of helping foreign nationals acquire fraudulent documents.

The crackdown on corrupt officials was part of the department's turn-around strategy in combating corruption.

Gilder said his department appreciated the television exposé as it "helps us to catch the perpetrators and deters individuals".
