The Independent Complaints Directorate (ICD), the police watchdog body, has ordered one of its longest-serving employees to face a disciplinary hearing after blowing the whistle on colleagues.
Omar Lalla approached police earlier this year to report that colleagues had circulated child pornography and sexual jokes about President Thabo Mbeki. He provided a dossier containing sexually explicit material about children and jokes about the president soliciting prostitutes at the Union buildings.
A source said Lalla was to face an ICD internal disciplinary hearing on Friday. It is to be preceded by a hearing of another ICD staff member charged with possession of pornographic material.
ICD spokesperson Steve Mabona said: "I can confirm that we have charged two people, who will face a departmental hearing. Other than that, we cannot comment."
Mabona said the investigation instituted after Lalla's revelations "still continues".
It is understood that although several people, including senior managers, received the pornographic material, only one member of the Cape Town office will face a charge of possession.
