Local lasses vie for Miss SA crown

On Saturday night, Thuli Sithole, possibly the country's most low-profile Miss South Africa, will hand over her crown at a gala event to be held at the Sun City Superbowl.

However, this year the organiser of the Miss South Africa beauty pageant, Sun International, is very ambitious - intending to choose her based on the criteria of the Miss Universe beauty pageant.

Word at Sun City, where the rehearsals for the event were held, was that a winner was wanted who wasn't necessarily the most beautiful woman in South Africa, but in the universe.

The 12 nominees have been chosen from all over the country and are all in their early 20s.

The pageant will be broadcast live on SABC2 from 6.30pm and combines Miss SA Teen with Miss South Africa.

The judges include Lucas Radebe, Brett Shuttleworth and Noeleen Maholwana-Sangqu for Miss SA Teen.

For Miss South Africa, Sun International has brought in Kerishnie Naicker, Roland Schoeman and Noni Gasa.

Sitting around the tables on Friday waiting their turn to rehearse were the Bala Brothers: Zwai, Loyiso and Pelo, as well as Unathi, all of whom are performing tonight.

Kabelo and Brandon October, who are also performing, had yet to arrive.

"This is the most chilled production I have ever worked on," said Unathi.

"The girls are relaxed and there is no bitchiness."

Dancers from the African Ballet Theatre were doing stretches while waiters were setting tables in white and silver for the VIP guests.

The guest list obviously reads like a who's who of South Africa's social scene.

Actors from soapies like Generations and Isidingo, artists like Thembi Seete and radio DJs like Metro FM's Azania, as well as mining magnate and socialite Patrice Motsepe and his wife Precious Moloi, will be in attendance.

The 12 Miss SA finalists are to be dressed by 12 top SA designers, including Malcolm Kluk and CGDT, Sun Goddess, Stoned Cherrie and Jenni Button.

The winner gets a tanzanite crown and sponsored prizes like a Land Rover and R50 000 from Sun International.
