The orphans of Emndeni Children's Home were given an experience of a lifetime when, not only did they receive two vehicles donated by musician Zola and Cell C, but they were also treated to a free concert by popular artists from his stable, Ghetto Ruff.
Zola is a goodwill ambassador for the United Nations in Southern and East Africa.
The children screamed in delight when kwaito artist, TV star and philanthropist Zola arrived in a 23-seater bus. It was followed by a refrigerated truck.
"My name is Zola and I come from up the road," he told them as he symbolically handed over the keys to two young children. "One day I wanted to make a difference."
The bus will help with transportation of the children to and from school as well as field trips. The second vehicle will help the home provide basic care and daily meals to more than 300 children in child-headed families in the Soweto suburbs of Emndeni, Zola and Dobsonville.
Zola's relationship with the Soweto orphanage started when he was 16. He would visit the home on weekends, play with the children and help out with chores.
Artists such as DJ Cleo, Brown Dash and Brickz performed for the delirious crowd. They couldn't contain themselves when Bongani Fassie and his hip-hop group Jozi performed. They stormed the stage and danced.
Some of the children had a chance to perform and thanked Zola for the vehicles with some top-class gumboot dancing.
