A motorist died after a fist fight with another driver in a road rage incident at Imbali, in Pietermaritzburg on Saturday night, police said.

Themba Sekhonyane was assaulted by a motorist who become enraged with him and accused him of failing to stop after he allegedly collided with his vehicle.

Sekhonyane died of suspected head injuries caused by the assault and a fall, in which he may have hit his head on the tarmac, police Superintendent Joshua Gwala said.

When officers arrived at the scene, Sekhonyane was lying on the ground with his face swollen and was bleeding from the mouth. He was certified dead at the scene.

Police arrested a 41-year-old man in connection with the death.

Gwala said the man had accused Sekhonyane of "bumping" his car while the two men were driving along a road, and of failing to stop after the accident.

He apparently followed Sekhonyane to Unit BB where he confronted him. An argument broke out and a fist fight took place during which Sekhonyane was severely assaulted and fell on the road.

A post mortem would be conducted to determine the exact cause of death, Gwala said.

Police had inspected the two vehicles for damage, but said both cars had had several scratches but no obvious, recent damage.

The cars were impounded for further investigation.

Gwala added that police had established that Sekhonyane had been travelling with another man who had allegedly also been assaulted during the incident, but who had fled the scene before the officers had arrived.

"We were told that he suffered facial injuries and made a report to other people that he was attacked," said Gwala.

In another incident, a 25-year-old man died on Sunday after being stabbed in the chest and buttocks in Edendale, Pietermaritzburg.

Gwala said Nkosinathi Nyandeni had been stabbed during an altercation with a man at a tavern shortly after midnight on Sunday. Friends took him to Edendale Hospital where he was treated and discharged. He remained overnight with friends, who found him dead in bed on Sunday morning.

Anyone with information on the incident is asked to contact Supt Mandla Mandlenkosi at 033 398 9752.
