The recent arrests of Nongoma Municipality politicians and senior officials – following allegations of fraud and corruption - are a welcome step toward restoring the integrity of KwaZulu-Natal’s local government structures.
Similarly, the proactive measures taken by Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) MEC, Thulasizwe Buthelezi in addressing recent corruption within Jozini Municipality are highly encouraging.
These recent actions align with the Auditor-General’s findings, which highlight pervasive mismanagement and financial irregularities across many KZN municipalities.
To foster a culture of accountability, it is imperative that such decisive interventions become standard practice across all 54 municipalities in our province. By consistently upholding transparency and enforcing stringent anti-corruption measures public resources can be utilized effectively for the benefit of our communities.
This is clear evidence that KZN’s Government of Provincial Unity (GPU) is working. The Democratic Alliance will continue to fight for justice for our communities and push for corrupt politicians and individuals to be brought to book. As part of KZN’s GPU, we remain firmly committed to the development of a capable and ethical state.
