@JustPlain_Sport The silence feels louder than ever day.
On Tuesday, 27 May 2025, Darren Scott, 61, one of South Africa’s most influential voices in both radio and sports television, passed away after a long, courageous battle with stage four malignant melanoma.
He was more than a broadcaster. He was the man who made radio personal.
And now, the mic has gone quiet. Darren’s journey wasn’t just long – it was legendary. Across four decades, he didn’t just do radio. He was radio. From his early days at Radio Bop to becoming a household name at 5FM, Jacaranda, East Coast Radio, and most recently, HOT 102.7FM, he brought fire, heart, and a kind of effortless connection that few ever master.
“He had that gift,” said fellow presenter Shane ‘Duke’ Wellington.
“That gift that makes you feel like he’s speaking directly to you.But behind that smooth delivery was a grinder. A guy who gave everything."
“He was the most dedicated radio person I’ve ever known,” said HOT 102.7FM’s Simon Parkinson. “At one point, Darren was doing two live shows a day — breakfast in one province and drive in another. Who does that? Darren Scott.”
When Lloyd Madurai was building HOT 102.7FM from scratch, Darren was the first name on his call sheet.
“And he said, ‘I’m in. Let’s go,’” Lloyd remembers. “That’s the energy Darren brought – all in. Always.
”All wrapped in that unmistakable voice."
“There was never a moment together without a funny chirp or a laugh,” said longtime friend Ian F.
Darren Scott wasn’t just about playlists and punchlines. He was a walking sports almanac. A fierce debater. A deeply spiritual man. A family-first guy who never let the grind erase his humanity.
He was inducted into the Radio Awards Hall of Fame in 2024 – 40 years after his first time behind a mic. And through it all, Darren never stopped giving.
As Bunny Majaja so perfectly said: ‘Radio will never forget you.’ Neither will we.
@KbzFire I was a HUGE Darren Scott fan until he dropped the k-bomb and then defended the action. A great pity.
@Peter_Stemmet This is a big one for me. When I was in high school, I wanted to be DARREN SCOTT!I fell in love with radio years earlier and enjoyed several different presenters for different reasons but Darren was my radio hero.
@BarneySimon Going to miss you my friend. One of the best broadcasters ever! RIP legend. No more pain #DarrenScott
