@Trending Tweeps reflect on the signing of the Freedom Charter, 70 years ago

Published

The Freedom Charter: The Charter was officially adopted on Sunday 26 June 1955 at a gathering of about 3,000 people, known as the Congress of the People in Kliptown, Soweto. The meeting was broken up by police on the second day, although by then the Charter had been read in full.

Yesterday was the 70th anniversary of the Freedom Charter, but many are disillusioned that its ideals are still just a dream:

@Bongani_MKJ 70yrs of the Freedom Charter, 30yrs into democracy, yet land remains in the hands of a privileged few. “All are equal before the law” but Gov has ensured that some are more equal than others. Khongolose has failed to honour the spirit and promise of it.

@Khu_Ntshavheni The Freedom Charter, a testimony to the power of unity and resistance.

@vha_mo I don’t like the Freedom Charter That document is selling out, especially on land. What do you mean: Land shall be shared amongst those that work it? The land belongs to the natives.

@SimelaneZimbin1 The land shall be shared among those who work it, 70 years later. Hasn’t been achieved we are still yet to reap the fruit of freedom charter because parasitic bourgeois masquerading as civil servants are not willing to implement it.

@ZizinjaAbelungu LAND SHALL BE SHARED AMONG THOSE WHO WORK IT!” We reject this frivolous document called the Freedom Charter that legitimises land theft by Jan van Riebeeck and his cronies. The land belongs to Black people and it shall be shared equally among Black people.

@Malome_Segodi ANC does not know how to interpret the freedom charter. They take from the citizens who trusted them with their votes. ANC allowed influx of migrants and refugees in the countries to loot the resources. Corruptions is in my ANC DNA. The citizens by birth are not yet liberated.

@BantuHolomisa We mark 70 years since the Freedom Charter was adopted in Kliptown. Born from the hopes of a people under siege, it declared: “The People Shall Govern.” But today, we must ask: Who truly governs? The Charter’s ideals have been betrayed. #FreedomCharter70 #UDM

@FebePotgieter The Freedom Charter is more than a mere list of demands for democratic reforms. It is a revolutionary document precisely because the changes it envisages cannot be won without breaking up the economic and political set-up of present South Africa.’ – Nelson Mandela, 1956
