326 Built over the site of the Circus. where gladiators fought to the death for the pleasure of Rome’s citizens, St Peter’s Basilica is consecrated. It is also built over the tomb of Peter, chief among Jesus’ disciples.
1307 In the Swiss village of Altdorf, William Tell, a crack marksman with a crossbow, shoots an apple off the top of his son’s head. Tell he had refused to bend the knee to an Austrian overlord who thought of a cruel punishment to make the hunter kill his son. A few years later the Swiss rose up, defeated an invading Austrian army and laid the foundations for their independence.
1421 A seawall at the Zuiderzee dyke in the Netherlands breaks, killing 10 000 people.
1477 William Caxton prints the first book in the English language, The Dictes And Sayengis Of The Phylosophers.
1497 Portuguese navigator Vasco da Gama reaches the Cape of Good Hope.
1836 William Gilbert is born in London. He wrote the verses for the Gilbert and Sullivan comic operas, poklng fun at the establishment.

1993 21 political parties approve a new constitution, expanding voting rights and ending white minority rule and Apartheid.
2015 Two female suicide bombers blow themselves up in Kano, Nigeria, killing 15 people and injuring over 100.
2018 A US missionary is killed with arrows on North Sentinel Island, in the Bay of Bengal. The island is home to one of the few remaining primitive tribes on Earth – hunter-gatherer tribes who have had little or no contact with modern civilization and who would be highly susceptible to fatal infectious diseases that most people have acquired immunity from.
2021 Muhammad Abdul Aziz and Khalil Islam are exonerated for the 1965 killing of Malcolm X, a prominent civil rights activist, saying they were ‘wrongly convicted’.
2022 International Bureau of Weights and Measures votes to abandon the leap second, originally inserted in 1972 to reconcile atomic and astronomical time scales.
