1905 Albert Einstein’s paper that leads to E = mc² – the world’s most famous formula – is published. This theory of special relativity says that mass and energy are the same physical entity and can be changed into each other. When you drive your car, E = mc² is at work. Same thing when you use an MP3 player. Einstein  is considered the greatest theoretician, along with Isaac Newton, the father of classical mechanics. His name became synonymous with genius. He gained worldwide fame in the first quarter of the 20th century thanks to the theory of relativity he developed and he forever change the perception of space and time.

1910 Sailors on Brazil’s warships violently rebel in what is now known as the Revolta da Chibata (Revolt of the Lash). It was the result of the use of whips (lashes) by white naval officers when punishing Afro-Brazilian and mixed-race enlisted sailors.

1918 Two German ammunition trains explode in Hamont, Belgium, killing 1 750 people.
