Kaizer Chiefs have signed teenager Kabelo Nkgwesa from their DStv Diski Challenge side, ahead of their Nedbank Cup match against Stellenbosch FC at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Saturday.
The defender will be available immediately and could feature in their crucial cup tie over the weekend, which kicks off at 6pm.
At just 19-years-old, Nkgwesa has been brought into a Chiefs side currently in eighth spot on the log. With their 28 points, Chiefs are 27 points behind table toppers Mamelodi Sundowns.
Only one side in the top eight on the log has conceded more than the 24 goals in the league than Chiefs, and is a serious area of concern for the Soweto Giants.
Nkgwesa’s management team confirmed the news on X.
“Congrats to Kabelo Nkgwesa who's been rewarded with a Kaizer Chiefs contract after impressing management with his outstanding performances in the current DDC campaign,” read the post from Mscsports Talent.
Chiefs have been unsettled in defence after Thatayaone Ditlhokwe left for Al-Ittihad last month in a reported R15 million deal.
The signing will be a significant boost for Chiefs, who have also recently welcomed Edmilson Dove back from injury.
On Wednesday, Chiefs bagged a welcome victory as striker Ashley du Preez was the hero with the winning goal against Magesi FC in their Betway Premiership clash at FNB Stadium.
It was a match in which Chiefs were completely dominant, as they reeled off 17 shots to just four of Magesi.
Chiefs finished 10th on the log last season, and though the consensus is that they’re playing much better football this term, they’re not much higher on the log under new coach Nasreddine Nabi.
