The Springbok Sevens produced a flawless opening day at the Vancouver Sevens on Saturday, winning all three of their pool matches to book a semi-final clash with Australia as they continue their push for back-to-back HSBC SVNS Series titles.

Philip Snyman’s men looked sharp and composed at BC Place, combining clinical finishing with resolute defence to emerge unbeaten from Pool A and maintain momentum heading into the knockout rounds.

The Blitzboks opened their campaign with an assured 21-5 victory over Great Britain that set the tone for the day, displaying the fast-paced attacking rugby that has made them one of the most consistent teams on the circuit this season.

Quick recycling at the breakdown and disciplined defence allowed South Africa to control territory and convert pressure into points. Returning speedster Ronald Brown made an immediate impact, scoring the first of their four tries.

Their second pool match against Spain proved more demanding, but the South Africans showed great composure in running out 28-7 victors. After absorbing sustained pressure, they struck decisively on the counterattack, turning defence into attack with the pace and support play that has become a hallmark of the team.

By the time they stepped onto the field for their final pool fixture against arch-nemesis New Zealand, they only needed a losing bonus points to qualify for the semi-finals. The Blitzboks, however, showed little inclination to ease off.

Instead, they delivered one of their most polished performances of the day, running in a series of well-worked tries — including a stunning opener that started in their in-goal area — to seal a 17-12 win and confirm top spot in the pool.

The reward is a semi-final meeting with Australia on Sunday (kick-off 9.33pm), a clash that promises to test the Blitzboks’ title credentials. The other semi-final, at 9.55pm, is between Fiji and Spain.

Should the Blitzboks beat the Aussies, they will play the final on Monday morning at 2.34am.

Snyman’s squad have been among the standout performers across the current SVNS campaign – with wins in Cape Town and Perrth – and arrived in Canada determined to continue that form.

With just one tournament remaining in the regular season after Vancouver, the stakes are high as teams jostle for position on the overall standings, ahead of the world championship.

For South Africa, the equation is straightforward: two more victories would not only secure the Vancouver title but also place them firmly on course to claim consecutive series crowns.
