For much of the season, Iqraam Rayners was forced to watch from the sidelines.

Injuries disrupted the striker’s campaign just as he was settling into life at Mamelodi Sundowns, ruling him out for a significant stretch of the season. Yet, despite the long spell away from action, Rayners has quietly forced his way back into the Golden Boot conversation.

His latest contribution arrived in Sundowns’ 2-0 victory over Orbit College FC, where the forward confidently converted from the penalty spot to take his league tally to ten goals.

That strike saw him draw level with Golden Arrows man Junior Dion at the top of the scoring charts in the Betway Premiership. It is an impressive return considering the amount of football the Bafana Bafana striker has missed this season.

Alongside his ten goals, Rayners has also chipped in with two assists, highlighting the impact he continues to make in Sundowns’ attack. But the road back has not been straightforward.

During Rayners’ absence, Sundowns strengthened their forward line with the arrival of Colombian striker Bryan Leon in January. Leon quickly hit the ground running and produced encouraging performances, which briefly raised questions about where Rayners would fit in once he returned.

Competition for places at Sundowns is fierce and the club’s attacking depth means reputations alone guarantee nothing.

Yet, Rayners has responded in the best possible way — by scoring goals.

His sharp movement inside the penalty area and instinctive finishing have once again made him a central figure in Sundowns’ attacking play. More importantly, his return has added another dimension to a side chasing both domestic and continental success.

With the title race against Orlando Pirates intensifying, Sundowns will need every goal they can find. Rayners, having fought his way back from injury and into the scoring charts, now looks determined to play a decisive role in how the season finishes.
