Orlando Pirates head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou has thrown his support behind striker Yanela Mbuthuma, urging fans to remain patient as the forward endures a difficult spell in front of goal.

Mbuthuma’s struggles continued despite Pirates’ emphatic 5-0 victory over Golden Arrows, with the 24-year-old failing to find the back of the net for a sixth consecutive match. The numbers suggest a solid campaign — seven goals and three assists in 24 appearances — but recent performances have placed the striker under increasing scrutiny, particularly given the volume of chances he has been unable to convert.

As Pirates continue their push in the Betway Premiership title race, the spotlight has intensified on Mbuthuma’s finishing, with supporters growing restless over missed opportunities in key moments. Ouaddou, however, has taken a firm stance in defence of his player, emphasising the importance of support rather than criticism.

“The fans have to understand that Mbuthuma is their son and they have to support him and help him so he can help the team,” he said.

The coach pointed to Mbuthuma’s overall contribution to the team, highlighting his work rate and movement as key elements often overlooked in the debate around his goal return.

“He’s doing a fantastic job between the lines but yes we do need that one goal and it will come and if our fans show him love and support, I’m 100% sure that he will be alright.”

While the goals have dried up in recent weeks, Mbuthuma’s role within the team remains significant. His ability to link play, create space and stretch defences has contributed to Pirates’ attacking fluency — even if it has not translated into personal scoring returns.

The challenge now is converting that influence into tangible output.

For a striker, confidence is often tied to goals, and prolonged droughts can quickly become psychological as much as technical. That is where backing from both the coaching staff and supporters becomes crucial.

Pirates, currently locked in a tight title race with Mamelodi Sundowns, will need contributions from across the squad in the final stretch of the campaign. If Mbuthuma can rediscover his scoring touch, it could provide an added edge in a race where margins are increasingly fine.

For now, Ouaddou’s message is clear — patience, belief and support remain key as the striker looks to turn his fortunes around.
