Kaizer Chiefs combined momentum with maturity to finally snap a five-year winless run against TS Galaxy, securing a controlled 2-0 victory at FNB Stadium to strengthen their grip on a CAF Confederation Cup spot.

Amakhosi arrived on the back of three consecutive wins and immediately imposed themselves on proceedings, dominating possession and territory from the first whistle.

The result sees Chiefs move to 42 points, opening a three-point gap over fourth-placed AmaZulu FC, while still holding two games in hand — a significant advantage in the race for continental qualification.

The return of captain Brandon Petersen added composure at the back, while the attacking trio of Fabio Silva, Glody Lilepo and Wandile Duba looked sharp and purposeful.

Despite their early dominance, Chiefs initially lacked precision in the final third, while Galaxy remained compact and disciplined, focusing on frustrating the hosts and limiting space.

Chiefs’ pressure eventually told in the 36th minute when Mduduzi Shabalala’s quality delivery created the opening for Fabio Silva, who rose well inside the box to head home his sixth goal of the campaign.

The hosts then put the result beyond doubt in the 74th minute as Glody Lilepo produced a moment of individual brilliance, surging from the halfway line before calmly finishing past the advancing goalkeeper.

The match itself followed a familiar pattern in the opening stages, with Chiefs controlling possession but struggling to create clear-cut chances. Silva had earlier come close after intercepting a loose back pass, only to hesitate and allow a defender to recover.

Galaxy offered little going forward in the first half, preferring to sit deep and absorb pressure, though their discipline ensured Chiefs had to remain patient.

The goal just before the break settled Amakhosi, who began to move the ball with greater confidence while maintaining control of the tempo heading into halftime.

After the interval, Galaxy showed more urgency, pushing higher up the pitch in search of an equaliser, while Chiefs appeared content to manage their lead. A lengthy interruption in the 65th minute due to floodlight failure briefly disrupted the contest, forcing both teams off the pitch for around 30 minutes.

However, Chiefs responded well after the restart, regaining composure before Lilepo’s decisive strike effectively ended the contest.

From there, the hosts managed the closing stages professionally, limiting Galaxy to speculative efforts while maintaining defensive solidity in front of Petersen. For Galaxy, the defeat highlights their inconsistency, as they once again struggled to turn defensive organisation into attacking threat.

On a day that demanded patience and control, Chiefs delivered both — and in doing so, finally overcame a fixture that had long troubled them.
